Now, in 1942, confectionery was added to war time rationing. So, from that time on, one needed to register at a shop, where coupons were needed, as well as money to purchase such treats. But this wasn’t the only obstacle, when stock finally did arrive, ques were very long, so prices were high and products ran out quickly. Hence Turkish Delight was dreamt of rather than being readily available. As Christmas figured as a theme in his book, it would have been likely that Turkish delight could have been on his mind also. In the book, it is always winter, but Christmas was banned by the White Witch. The similarities between the Narnia winter, and the bleak wartime, become apparent. Now, confectionery rationing didn’t end until 1953, a whole 8 years after the end of the war. So, as Turkish delight would have been both difficult to get and very expensive, when the Witch inquires of Edmund what he likes most to eat, Lewis answered this on “his” behalf, as he was probably longing for some, himself. This would also lead you to conclude, that Edmund, wasn’t just asking for Turkish delight, but Christmas as well….!
