Description
Turkish delight is roughly five hundred years old. For most of that time it came in very few flavours indeed — the fruit-and-novelty end of things is a modern invention, and a fairly recent one.
This box is the three that were genuinely there: Original, Rose and Lemon. Twenty pieces each of the first two, with ten of Lemon to cut through them.
Original is the plain lokum the whole sweet is built on. Rose is the flavour it became famous for. Lemon is the oldest of the additions and the one that stops the other two becoming cloying. Nothing else, because nothing else belongs.
How it tastes
Original — Plain lokum, and the base everything else is built on. Honeyed and soft, with a faint citrus note underneath. Mild enough that it resets your palate between the stronger pieces.
Rose — Floral, perfumed and unmistakable — this is the flavour most people mean when they say “Turkish delight”. As old as the sweet itself, and worth trying properly made before deciding you dislike it.
Lemon — Sharp and clean, built on zest rather than sugar. It is the flavour that cuts through everything around it, which is why we put a little in boxes that would otherwise turn heavy.
